NOTE: It's important to distinguish between file container formats and compression formats, or codecs. You might want to convert from MOV to MP4 because MP4 is generally more universally supported - although in reality, both file formats are widely supported these days. Although the format is lossy, this enables small file sizes, whilst retaining a good level of video quality. MP4 is an international standard and probably the most popular video and audio file container at present, with native support in Windows, Macs, iOS, and Android devices. MOV files are one of the few container formats that support alpha channel, or transparency. They were built as a cross-platform format, meaning they can be played on many Mac and Windows applications. MOV files were created by Apple, are associated with the application Quicktime and often times use the MPEG-4 codec for compression.
